Paper jams are the most common printer problem — and also the most damaging when handled incorrectly. Yanking paper out without care can tear it inside the machine, break plastic guides, and even damage the fuser unit in laser printers. Here's the right way to do it.

Before You Do Anything: Turn Off the Printer

Always power off the printer and unplug it before reaching inside. This is especially important for laser printers — the fuser unit can reach temperatures above 200°C and remains hot for several minutes after shutdown. Wait at least 2 minutes before opening any laser printer panels.

Step 1: Locate the Jam

Most modern printers show a paper jam indicator light or display a message identifying the location of the jam. Common jam locations are:

  • Input tray: Paper got stuck entering the printer
  • Inside the printer body: Paper stopped mid-feed
  • Output tray / rear exit: Paper got stuck leaving the printer
  • Duplexer (double-sided unit): Rear panel of the printer

Open all accessible panels (front cover, rear access panel, duplexer) to visually locate the jammed paper before attempting to pull it.

Step 2: Remove the Paper Correctly

Once you can see the jammed paper, follow these rules:

  • Pull slowly and steadily — never yank
  • Pull in the direction of the paper path (usually the same direction it would exit)
  • If you feel resistance, stop and try from a different access point
  • Use both hands and keep the paper flat to prevent tearing

If the paper tears, remove every piece before resuming. Even a small fragment left inside will cause repeated jams.

Step 3: Check for Torn Fragments

After removing the bulk of the paper, shine a torch into the paper path and check for any remaining fragments. Gently shake the printer over a table to dislodge small bits. Do not use a vacuum cleaner directly inside the printer — the suction can damage sensors and light components.

Step 4: Close All Panels and Power On

Close all covers firmly. Ensure the paper tray is properly seated. Power the printer back on. Many printers will print a self-test page or continue the interrupted job automatically.

Print a test page to confirm the jam is fully cleared and the printer is working correctly.

Why Do Paper Jams Keep Happening?

If your printer jams frequently, the paper itself is rarely the cause. Common recurring jam causes include:

Worn Paper Feed Rollers

Rollers degrade over time and lose their grip. Cleaning them with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with water often restores grip. Severely worn rollers need replacement — this is the most common cause of repeat jams in office printers that have printed 30,000+ pages.

Wrong Paper Type or GSM

Using paper that's too thick (high GSM), too thin, or damp for your printer model causes jams. Check your printer's specifications for the supported paper weight. Most inkjet printers handle 60–90 GSM; laser printers handle up to 120 GSM.

Overfilled Paper Tray

Loading too many sheets causes the top sheets to bind. Fill the tray to the "Max" line only. Fan the paper stack before loading to separate sheets and reduce static.

Misaligned Paper Guides

Paper guides that don't snugly hold the stack allow sheets to enter at an angle, causing skewed or jammed pages. Adjust guides to sit firmly against the edge of the paper stack — not too loose, not so tight they bend the paper.

Foreign Objects

Paper clips, staples, sticky labels, and torn fragments left inside the paper path cause jams. Inspect the paper tray and feed area regularly.

When You Need a Technician

Seek professional help if:

  • Paper has jammed deep inside and you can't reach it
  • The printer shows a paper jam error even after clearing the paper
  • You hear grinding or clicking sounds during paper feed
  • The printer was physically damaged when the jam occurred
  • Jams recur every few pages despite fresh paper and correct loading

At M.R. Electronics in Coimbatore, we diagnose paper jam issues for free. Roller replacement and fuser cleaning are same-day repairs in most cases.
